Even more silly is for someone to think that their beliefs should come before personal freedom, equality, and respect for our fellows. Marriage should be something that anyone can participate in. It's a union between two people who love each other. I know that's beside the point, but it is very important.
After studying human sexuality for about 40 years I believe that it is far more complex than most people think. There are so many factors that can affect sexuality. I've also come to believe that basically, all humans are potentially bi-sexual at birth. The polarizing "us and them" type mentality that prevails as a result of the labels, Gay - Straight, is very disturbing and serves to perpetuate further ignorance of human sexuality.
If you consider the pressures that children and teens growing up have to deal with as a result of the pervasive force of Heterosexism, a force that demands almost constant proof of heterosexuality especially on the part of boys and young men, it's no wonder that the statistics only show 10% of the population being homosexual. In modern society, I believe there's a whole gray area between the two sexuality extremes. In this gray area, many people live so called heterosexual lifestyles in terms of behaviour, but are to varying degrees, homosexual in desire.
I agree with you about the many variations of sexuality on this planet. And a majority of reproduction in nature even occurs without sex. And think about the possibilities of life forms in other galaxies! There are probably far more complex forms of intelligent life that reproduce in a manner that we can't even imagine. Sex, as we think of it is probably unknown.
The Bible thumpers love to call homosexual relations a sin, and equate homosexuality with promiscuity and prostitution, yet they refuse to recognize same sex marriage that would endorse monogamy and commitment..
One last thing, our modern society could take a lesson from a tribe of native peoples of the Amazon Rain Forrest. I believe they're called the Zoa. They are untouched by the modern world and technology. They've survived peacefully for many centuries in this Rain Forrest. They wear no clothes at all. They hunt only for the food they need and have the greatest respect for the earth, nature, and for life, including each other. They have no wars. They have polygamous marriages - with men having more than one wife AND women having more than one husband! No homophobia here. Children are free to explore their sexuality, there is no abuse. Families can have sex freely, but with the greatest respect for each other. There's no rape. And they seem to have mastered a knowledge of NFP - Natural Family Planning. They do not kill their pre-born as is so common in our society, which BTW is a heterosexual atrocity - another result mostly of forced heterosexism. These people are probably the most psychologically healthy people in the world. Bible thumpers, take heed!
