(Original Air Date: 10/29/07) Fraud. lies. conspiracy. They may sound like the latest Washington scandal, but these are allegations of exes at war over child support. Dr. Phil's guests claim they became victims of the perfect crime when they were led to believe they fathered a child that was not biologically their own and were forced to pay. First up, Enrique says he was shocked and angered to discover he was not the father of his youngest daughter, Selina, and that she was conceived during his ex-wife, Maria's, adulterous affair. Maria says he raised Selina but then abandoned her to save money. Why does Maria say Enrique's current wife is to blame for the fractured relationship? Next, 13-year-old Selina speaks one on one with Dr. Phil. Will she decide to let the man she once called Daddy back in her life? Then, Carnell Smith, who uses the online moniker, "Man4Justice," suffered a similar fate to Enrique, and but he fought and won. He says he's tired of seeing women trap men and get away with it. A heated debate ensues between him and feminist attorney, Gloria Allred, who argues that men like Enrique should continue to act as the father ... and continue paying! Talk about the show here.

Real Biological Father

It is not fair to the man to make him think he is the biological father and make him pay support while the biological father is running around foot loose and fancy free and not having to take responsibility for his child. A child should know who the real father is. The child may have a medical emergency and only the real parent can help save his/her life. It would be kinda late to try to find the real father then, wouldn't it? Women ought to stop playing these games that affect other lives. (Men too), Women should stop letting themselves get pregnant. I say that because women are in control of their bodies. Men and women should stop having unprotected sex and making babies.  Some woman get money from both men.
What about the real father?  He has been denied his daughter all these years. Why has he not been sought out.  Or does the mother have so many options, she doesn't know who he is?  What a shame for this daughter.

The actual biological father should have to pay support.  If the child and former "father" wishes to continue a good and established relationship, then it is of best interest to do so.  That does not mean financial support to the mother.  She has already done him enough wrong.

the parent trap...we must make it mandatory that with every birth a DNA is part of the birth certificate program.  EVERY WOMEN HAVING A  BABY MUST SUBMIT TO A DNA  producture with the INNOCENT man being named as the FATHER...NO EXCEPTIONS....Ill bet gloria alred will be seeing RED at that law

Gloria is an embarrassment to all females!! Most of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is absolutely idiotic!! I do feel sorry for the child in this story, but Gloria is soooo way off base.  The child's mom should be 100% responsible for all of this mess.  You reap what you sow.

what a joke!!

a man should not have to pay for a child that is not his!! plain and simple.. the child support system is a joke i think personally!! men have no rights at all.. my husbands ex takes him back everytime we have a child together and she already gets way too much and she never lets him see his kids!! men have no rights when it comes to their children unless the mother is good hearted!! you dont see that very much.. women dont make children by themselves!! this issue doesnt really suprise me thats just how america is and looks like it will stay that way until someone makes a difference in this country.. i do agree that its really sad for a child to find out that a man that they thought was their dad for years is not their dad.. that would be the worst for a child thats when you need to blame the mother because she knew how many people she messed around with!! so if there was a chance that another man was the father then hold her accountable not a father who had no idea!!

Appalled and irritated

I cannot believe how cavalier that Maria was on today's show.  She has sex outside of her marriage, conceives a child, pawns it off on her husband and then today she wants to complain about how her ex-husband handled the situation after he found out!?!  I feel sorry for Enrique, although I disagree with how he handled it, I do believe the more responsible person for this tragedy is Maria.  I think contrary to what that Allred woman said this problem is much more widespread than we think.  For that Allred woman to say that Enrique should still pay because th real problem is all the deadbeat dads that do not pay.  What a crock, women for many years have been doing this type of thing and getting a free get out of jail token.  It is time that they be required to pony up to their misdeeds.  Men should be able to sue these women that lie about paternity to get that child support.  Men need to stop being so stupid and start insisting on a DNA test all the time!!  If after a man has paid child support he finds out the child is not his he should be able to recoup the money from the woman who lied.  If women were held accountable in this fashion maybe they would think twice about lying.  Maybe they would also think harder about those they share their favors with.

saddend by the whole thing

When did the mother tell the child that she  was the reason the father felt betrayed , when did she accept responsibility for her actions, she sat there while the child blamed the man for everything. yes he went about it the wrong way, but he was hurt and frustrated. If the issue is not the money and only the child then the mother would take back the request for the maximum child support. She needs to make things right. the man needs to take her to court, men should not be at fault when the woman clearly lies.come on ladies we can stand on our own , we do not need the wrong man to support us we can do it ourselves. AND does the real dad not deserve to know he has a daughter ???

I feel really bad for any man deceived the way he was.  But a dna does not change the bond between people, or it shouldn't.   I think that the child support thing should  not be an issue.  He isn't the biological father he should not be required to pay anything unless he chooses to do so.  I think that it should be his choice.  And most reasonable people would not break that bond how could you.  I worked with a man raising two children for 13 years and found out that they weren't his biologically.  He didn't care.  He had raised them and in his heart they were his kids and no one was going to change that.  That is how it should be.  Biology does not a parent make.  It is the time and love that you put into the relationship.

DNA

 

I think that If DNA test were mandatory at every birth, this problem wouldnt be an issue. Women would not be ble to lie, and the kids would not suffer in the long run.

First each parent should take responsibility for their own actions.  I am disappointed that this whole show became about the almighty dollar and not at all about the child who is the victim.

 

Enrique, yes you were deceived, and not to help matters any your current wife opened a can worms that was not her business amd made matters worse. I am not condoning what your ex-wife did, she has no conscience even looking at her daughter everyday, but neither do you.

 

Anyone can provide DNA to fatherm a child but it takes a real man to be a dad.  You obviously are mnot that if you abondoned that child because of your own selfish anger.

 

Believe me you have no idea what kind of emotional damage you have done to this child.  It will affect her future relationships.  I have a child who her real father did the same thing you have done over money , she is now 17 nand it affects how she perceives relationships and the trust there is supposed to be with it.

 

I suggest you forget that you paid all that money and pray that your ex-wife acts like a real mother and repays the money on the form of counseling for the child.  Maybe one day you feel the loss of giving up that child.

10/29 Parent Trap

After watching the show today I am furious. I am 18 and I have a daughter who just turned one. When I was pregnate I did not know who the biological father of my daughter was. I told the two men that I didn't know. What this woman did was wrong. You DONT lie about it. Its all her fault. She got this man emotionally involed for like 10 years!!!!!! Everyone makes mistakes, but she knew from the beginning that he very well could have not been the father. Being in that situation before I understand that it would have been embarrassing but she should have told the truth from the beginnning like I did. It made it much eaiser after my daughter was born. He should not have to pay child support any more, but I believe he should still love this girl and interact with her.
