(Original Air Date: 05/13/08) She was the most sought-after nanny in her neighborhood. Moms trusted her, and kids adored her. But Stephanie, 23, has been hiding a secret for two years: She’s addicted to crack and heroin. Stephanie’s mother, Kim, says she’s tried everything to help her daughter, but “when does a child listen to a parent?” Dr. Phil has some hard questions for Kim. Is she a bad influence on her addicted daughter? Joani, a former addict and guest, caught shocking evidence on videotape. Then, who does Stephanie think is partly responsible for her downward spiral? An absent father, a devoted best friend, an incarcerated boyfriend and two former employers  -- Stephanie hears from them all. Will this be the wake-up call she needs to enter rehab? Plus, when former guest and heroin addict, Sarah, shares her recovery story, will it inspire Stephanie to change her life before her addiction kills her?  Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Smug

Quote From: justnancy

I think she may have been smiling because she was nervous or because she was high or because she was trying to make people like her.  She seems to use lightheartedness and humor to deflect even the most serious of situations, like when she was chuckling off her boyfriend's stabbing her.

I don't think she was smug or arrogant.  I think her self-esteem was in the gutter.

Although now that I think about it, arrogance and low self-esteem usually walk hand in hand.

I was not the only one that notice the smug smiles others have posted the same observation,

I think you are right about her self-esteem being at risk.  My heart went out to her, and I salute her for making the move to get help.  She does seem like a sweet girl, and I feel she will make it.

I truly believe her Mother needs some help as Dr. Phil suggested.  She is in denial.

i think you are confused

I don't know what show you were watching but I don't know where you got this information about the father knowing Steph. first?   The Father left the household when she was two.

Please explain?  Your post does not make any sense.

I believe who this person is referring to is Kim's 26 year old husband with which Stephanie claimed to have known before her mom ever met him...this DID seem to bother Kim as she was trying to justify it was o.k. for her to be married to a 26 year old who by first impression to me seems no better than the rest of them...

Stephanie's father was not part of that aspect of the show...he was only on the show via phone and no picture images were shown of him as far as i can remember...

Feeling for Heather

As I was watching this show and they showed Heather, Stephanie's best friend, it brought back a lot of memories.  In college I had made a friend and we became like sisters, but even closer.  She turned into an alcoholic that year and I did everything in my power to help her and not be an enabler and that was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life....to watch someone I love throwing their life away.  Through recovery I stayed by her side.  Shortly before my wedding she told me she not only didn't want to be a bridesmaid anymore, but that she didn't want contact with me anymore as well.  I haven't seen her for over 7 years and I hope she is doing well.  Heather if you are reading this I want to let you know that I feel your hurt and frustration and I hope that Stephanie makes it through recovery.  I know how hard this is for you and all you can do is pray.  Stick by her side, but also protect yourself.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Good luck Stephanie!

How does Stepanie think those little children will feel now that she's gone from their lives?

First of all did Stephanie think she was safe just because those children she was responsible for?  I mean come on, what if a fire had broken out or just one of those children had quit breathing?  Would Stephanie have been alert enough to save their lives?  I think not!  Things can go bad so quick in a situation like this, and when emergencies happen they require the responsible party to be able to think in a clear and rationale mind, and Stephanie definitely wasn't in that state of mind, because she was in a drug fog!  I wonder just how bad Stephanie would have felt if an emergency would have happened with one of those children, and this child had died because of Stephanie's fogged up state of mind!  Better yet, what if Stephanie would have had to tell the parents that one of their children had died, due to her fogged up state of mind!!!  When you take on the responsibility of watching some one's children, people need to remember that emergencies can happen quick, and when they do happen you need to be able to respond at a moment's notice.  If I was the parent of one of those children Stephanie was watching, I wouldn't have paid her for that night because she was only thinking of herself when she took those medicines, and those parents might have lost one of their children's lives.  If my child would have gotten hurt or God forbid, one of those children had died I think that I would be the first one to help send her up the river for murder, for the rest of her life!

I further feel that her mother isn't in touch with reality either.  What was she thinking when she gave Stephanie those drinks, and sniffing cocaine with her daughter!!!  I really liked what Dr. Phil said to this mother which was; "you mean to tell me that some one grabbed your hair, forced her face down on that table and made you sniff that cocaine"?  People seem to be really be good at blaming some one else for their problems.  It's just like Dr. Phil said to Stephanie's mom; "you must really be in denial"!!!  I realize that Stephanie's grown up now and needs to take responsibility for what she does, but to me her mother isn't fit to be a mother to any one!!!  Grow up Stephanie and learn to take responsibility for your own actions, because for every action taken in life, there's always a reaction or a consequence of some kind!!!

In my opinion first of all those little children are going to feel deeply sad, because some one whom they thought so much of isn't in their lives anymore.  Children can't comprehend on the same level as adults do, so I think that they'll feel very confused and betrayed -and probably never trust anybody again in their lives!!!  Stephanie better thank her lucky stars or God that things didn't get any worse than they did???  After seeing this show, I think that parents should think long and hard before asking Stephanie to ever babysit for them again, because she's definitely proved that she can't be trusted!!!

People make mistakes all the time.. She showed remorse for her mistake.. Give her a break.. If we were all punished for our mistakes in this life we would be on the streets.  Good people do bad things..

Only God should judge us and who are you to say she can't turn her life around. That is why she went out the show not to have people not support her.
