When Tom Cruise gave his opinion about the drugging of America, he created a firestorm of controversy. Are we an overmedicated nation? Dave and Jill feel as if their 7-year-old son is holding them hostage in their own home. He's on three medications, but his uncontrollable fits of rage are destroying their marriage. Is this a real medical issue or a parenting problem? Then, two women with powerful personal stories debate the "Cruise controversy." They both think their opinion is right, but what does Dr. Phil think? Plus, an outraged father confronts his ex-wife and demands that she stop medicating their 9-year-old son. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Here is a definition of what ADHD can be like

I'm going to write this down and this was my son and the description of his behavior before he was on meds for adhd.

The child with the predominantly hyperactive and impulsive(my son very much so)type of adhd has a much greater chance of being identified early and recieving diagnoses and intervention, because the behaviors are often very disruptive and noticeable. These children get our attention! There has been much more research over the years about this type of adhd, consequently, we know more about the most effective treatments for hyperactive/impulsive children and teens.

Then there are the ones who are harder to identify:

A child/teen with the predominantly inattentive type of adhd(oradd without hyperactivity/impulsivity) does not easily get our attention. The behaviors are not disruptive, so they can be overlooked or misinterpreted/misdiagnosed. Yet having this disorder can be very problematic for the child, resulting in significant academic issues and underachievement.

There now see how differently they are explained and how different they actually are. There are kids out there that are diagnosed wrong and maybe given meds for something else other than adhd and then there are the kids out there that are completely missed and are failing in there academic and other parts of life and they get called lazy and there not.

09/28 Overmedicating America: The Cruise Controversy

Quote From: cleokel

I do not think that Tom has ever had anybody in his life suffer from a mental illness. Because if he had, he would not want to see that person suffer without even trying medication. I have been dealing with depression for many years and recently have been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Earlier this year, I began getting worse and extremely suicidal. When Lithium was prescribed, after a few weeks, the ruminating suicidal thoughts were not so intense. I was close to dying before and now with the medication and therapy of course, I am no longer obsessing about death. I truly beleive the lithium was a MIRACLE PILL  because saving my life was a miracle. Tom Cruise, please come to debate with Dr. Phil. I think he might teach you something since he does know the history of psychiatry a lot better than you. And one day when you crash from your manic couch jumping state, Dr. Phil may be there to help you.

I couldn't agree with you more! However, I don't think Dr.Phil could help Tom Cruise- he is hopelessly brainwashed by that "cult " he belongs to. I think it's pretty ironic that he says there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance and it looks like He has a chemical imbalance!

09/28 Overmedicating America: The Cruise Controversy

Quote From: common

Not to generalize, but let's be honest with ourselves for a brief moment.

We have become a Mc Donald's society.  What I mean by this is we (the general populous) do not want to take the time to address the root cause of our problems.  We want someone or something to make it all better now!

Our medical society is only catering to what we have requested.

Seriously, when was the last time you took an active roll in your medical treatment by doing your own research?  Did you just fill your last prescription because you "trust" your PCP?

Look back a few posts, we are even arguing about anothers position mearly because they are a public figure!

Take charge of your life! Make your own "educated" descisions

How many Mc Donald's are in your neighborhood?

I think we have been upset by Tom Cruise's "position" not because he is a public figure, but rather because he is WRONG and if ppl believe his nonsense (because he is a celebrity) it could be dangerous!

you are so wrong!!!!

Quote From: starkitty7

HELLO if you read the package insert given with every prescription medication has all side effects and risks. The public has this information to make an informed choice. People CHOOSE not to investigate medications and their risks, people choose to not read the fine print and then go on TV and whine about it. Stop blaming the drug companies for everything and take responsibility.

5 years ago that fine print did not tell EVERYTHING they knew of these drugs,  its because of people like tom cruise and myself who have been fighting at the levels of congress FDA and drug companies,  thats what people want to belive is that its all in the package insert...BUT ITS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!             they hid the truth!!!!

Drug hysteria

Quote From: cingular

Tom Cruise has nothing to do with the fact that we are over medicating here in America, Its a shame that People can not take their personal feelings for Tom Cruise or his film ratings or most of all his religious or personal beliefs and set that aside and focus on the topic of this subject, THE FACTS, the topic is OVERMEDICATING!!! 36 million people or more are on drugs, people have been lied to, there has been a huge cover up by the pharmaceutical companies, they knew that these drugs cause death and many many other problems and they hid the truth, the FDA hid the truth, right now most of these pharmaceutical companies are paying people off left and right, this is not a matter of who should or should not take antidepressants but should the people taking them at least know the truth about the clinical trials, it is not a small percentage of people who have horrible effects from these drugs, its more then we thought, these drugs are very very dangerous and i thank people like TOM CRUISE who went out and took a risk that people would not really like what he said, but he stood up and spoke the TRUTH, not his opinion, we need more people to stand firm in the FACTS. not opinions. I am not a Scientoligist, this is not a religious issue, I am a victim and I deserved to know the truth. I am alive and I plan on telling as many people I can how dangerous these drugs are.
All drugs kill, as do aspirin, alcohol, sugar, fats, vitamins, and donuts. At least prescription drugs come with labels and are packaged with fact sheets. Ask for them at your pharmacy and READ them. Question what you take.

I submit that the reason we take so many medications is that we live longer but not necessarily well. With longer life come the maladies that attend aging. Should we remain vigilant that our medications are pure and fully tested? Of course. Would we choose to suffer needlessly from mental health diseases when treatment exist? Of course not. Psychotropic drugs have allowed patients to be free of custodial care, a euphemism for insane asylums, and function as productive citizens.

Ranting of conspiracies is both uninformed and pointless.

The Stigma of Mental Disorders

People with mental disorders are stigmatized by the ignorant people around them who do not understand the ramifications of having a brain with a mind of its own. "Get over it," is the unkindest cut of all to people already in fear of carrying the stigma of a mental disorder. Mr. Cruise's ignorance laced with contempt for menal illness is unfortunatelly rampant in our society.

What we do and don't know about ADHD

The following is what they know about ADHD:

1. Approximately 2 million children in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD. (Dr. Phil even came up with a figure in that area.)

2. It is estimated that approximately 3-5% of student population has ADHD.

3. Many children with this disorder slip through the cracks. They have/had not been identified or provided with effective interventions.

4. ADHD is diagnosed between 3 to 9 times more frequently in boys than girls. It is believed that many more girls actually have ADHD and aren't diagnosed because often they exhibit fewer of the disruptive behaviors associated with hyperactivity and impulsivity. Many girls have the predominantly inattentive type of the disorder and are likely not being identified and diagnosed.

5. The challenging behaviors that are exhibited by children with ADHD stem from their physiological, neurobiological disorder.

(My son exhibits that neuro disorder-its why he is only on a 12 yr old leaning level instead of 16 as his age)

The inappropriate behaviors they may display are generally not willful or deliberate. Typically their behaviors and how they impact on others are not even within the childs awareness.

(That whole statement describes my son to this very day)

6. Children with ADHD are more likely than their peers to be suspended or expelled from school, retained a grade or drop out of school, have trouble socially and emotionally, and experience rejection, ridicule(my son is experiencing that right now in his school) and punishment.

7. In spite of difficulties, children/teens with ADHD may also have many strengths and high potential. They are often creative, intelligent, and gifted in certain areas.(examples: artistically, musically, athletically, verbally).

8. ADHD is a lifelong disorder. It generally continues into adolescence, and up to 70% continue to exhibit symptons into adulthood. However, the symptons change as the person matures. Hyperactive behaviours  of younger children(running around the classroom, falling out of chairs)_ are seen as fidgetiness, pacing, and less overt behaviours as adolescence/adults. (examples would be : changing plans and career paths frequently---this is what I worry about with my son for after he graduates)

Medicating children

I am thankful for modern medicine and all that it has done for my son and our family.  The right medication and a competent doctor is what has saved our lives.  My son has ADHD - on a scale of 1-10 of severity he was a 12 - and so I can empathize with the young family on your show tonight.  His younger years were pure hell and there were many times when I thought none of us could cope with it any longer, but we hung in there and it has taken much more than medication for my son to develop and grow into a physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy teenager that still takes a non-stimulant medication to help him focus in school.  Behavioral changes came about slowly but we have come through this trial with flying colors.  My son will have to cope with this problem for the rest of his life but I hope that he has learned and will continue to learn skills to manage and cope with it.  The up side to this condition is a highly intelligent individual that is compassionate, spontaneous, fun-loving and so creative!   He is one of four shining jewels in my crown of motherhood.

Too General a Statement

I am pretty upset about Tom Cruises' comments about psychiatry in general and about his opinion regarding medicating people with mental or emotional problems...      First....   I am not sure how much education Mr Cruise has, but I'm pretty sure he is not a DR....  either MD or psychiatric..  I prefer to get my children and loved ones diagnosed and treated by someone with the education to back up his/her treatment of patients.   Also, Yes, I agree that there are cases where children and even grown ups are overmedicated or on the wrong medication...   But to say no one should benefit from these medications is really in bad taste and makes him look really bad, not knowledgable like he probably thinks.  You cannot generalize.  Each person is different.  ADD and ADHD and Depression run rampent in my family....   my four sons all have different forms or degrees of ADD / ADHD and I have depression.  If it were not for medication I would have spent the last 12 or 15 years in bed crying every day.....     I just feel he should have thought before he made such a broad statement in regards to something HE KNOWS NOT ENOUGH ABOUT TO DIAGNOSE OR TREAT PEOPLE FOR.  He is what is refered to as, "practicing medicine without a license.."
