Online Gamers Anonymous

Online Gamers Anonymous has been a huge help to me as well. I would encourage anyone with questions or concerns about their gaming or the compulsive play of someone they love to visit:

Epistemic Privilege

The 'double standard' that allows African American people to use this word is called epistemic privilege - the right of a group in society to define itself in terms it finds acceptable, whether other groups or the dominant society object or not. Why Dr. Phil chose to spend an entire episode on this topic is beyond my understanding; it changes nothing.

I'm a white male that finds the word evocative of a time when African American people were shunned, spat upon and enslaved, but I can't change how some choose to define themselves and each other. I will continue to love without prejudice; that's all I can do.

Nader

I have to agree that it was great to see Nader on the program today. It's a pity we're not seeing him in the Presidential Debate tonight. He is a candidate, is he not?

Best wishes to everyone at the Dr. Phil Show who helped put this episode together - you're wonderful!

Thanks for your interest

Thanks to everyone for your interest in this issue. As a guest on this episode, I look forward to helping people by my experience. One of the visitors to this forum has referred to "addictive personalities" being addicted to anything. While I'm sure that's true in some cases, I've found that Internet addictions such as online gaming have been particularly powerful. Neither alcohol nor street drugs have ever appealed to me as much as online role playing games.

My blog has a large compilation of my own thoughts on video game addiction and recovery and a new podcast. I hope you'll take time to visit:

Thanks,
Brad

Thanks for your interest

Thanks everyone for posting to this forum!

The reason I agreed to be on this show was because we need to raise awareness of online gaming addiction. What I put my wife through because of my addiction for 8 or 9 years is unspeakable. Through my blog, I hear from a lot of gamers' spouses about the same things that I used to do: lying, spending thousands of dollars on gaming, neglecting responsibilities.

Please feel free to visit my blog at ExGamer.net for more on my story.

I was there, so...

What the heck is wrong with you people who post messages BEFORE the actual show is aired???  The message boards are meant for commenting AFTER  you see the show.
Good question...

I was on the show as a guest, so I guess my excuse is I want to introduce myself and start talking to people about the issues raised on the show because I'm really passionate about recovery from online gaming addiction.

Online Gamers Anonymous can help...

My blog will have a new podcast tomorrow night at 7 pm Eastern time.

Great Response!

Thanks everyone for your emails, blog comments and forum posts! It's been such an amazing day so far. As far as I'm concerned, today could not have happened without the love and care of God, my wife, my family, my church, my doctor/counsellor, friends and the great people at Online Gamers Anonymous.

I just want to acknowledge everyone who's stepped in to support and encourage me over the past nine months. Quitting an 80 hour per week addiction is not easy. It's not something that can be done overnight, and I certainly didn't do it all by myself!

Best wishes, love and prayers to everyone who's dealing with this in their own lives; hopefully you can find some encouragement in what you saw and heard today. Yes, you can break free and reclaim your real life!

No Problem With Your Gaming

Quote From: mommyack

Dr.Phil I am a mother of two and a wife. My husband got me into on-line games back when we were  dating and it is a hobby of ours. We play in moderation and our children do not suffer. They are smart girls who know their mom and dad love them. I don't mind if my husband plays MMOG at least he is at home and not in a bar getting drunk or whoring around I know what he is doing and who he is with. My husband works a 3rd shift job 12Hr. shifts he is very successful at what he does and he always takes time out for his family. I also play at night while the girls are sleeping when my husband is working and my housework is done and our bills are paid. Like I said before you can play these games in moderation and you can have a life.

These games are not bad it all in how you look at things.

Hi!

Brad from today's show here...

I had a problem with gaming. Games were intended to be a diversion, not a cure for life's problems. You and your husband understand that and seem to have excellent boundaries around your play time.

If anyone's wondering... I am not saying to the world "games are evil everyone should stop playing."

If you enjoy a healthy balance, keep playing.

Here's my life equation:

Brad + Gaming = Living Hell

It's just a bad mix for, so I'll stay clear and enjoy other social activities, movies, church etc. that actually have a beginning, middle and end, unlike online role playing games. I can turn those non gaming activities off and go to bed at 10 pm every night, and stay married.

:)

Regards,
Brad
