Overmedicating children

I understand that there are circumstances where children need to be medicated, but I believe that doctors dispense meds too freely.

My daughter and granddaughter lived with me for most of my granddaughter's life (she's 11 years old)....Last year my daughter got married and moved a couple of hours away from me.  My granddaughter reacted; reacted all over the place.

My daughter brought her to a pyschologist who said she was depressed with good reason, and recommended she see a psychiatrist and take an antidepressant for a short period of time.  Well, she saw the psychiatrist, and within 10 minutes of the visit, he told my daughter that my granddaughter was bi-polar, and she's been medicated for about a year now.  They keep changing the meds, and upping the strength.

My daughter won't consider that this doctor doesn't know what he's talking about, because at least she's sleeping a little better (my granddaughter has always had trouble sleeping).

I believe that there should be some kind of "watch dog" agency to protect children, but I'm sure that's never going to happen.

So, my lot in life is to just keep my mouth shut (as much as I can) and try to support my granddaughter as best I can when I see her, and pray like crazy every day for her.
