Hello Everyone,
My name is Angie and I am 26 almost 27 years old. I want to quit smoking so badly. I am about to graduate from school and will be going into the medical field. I have learned so much about smoking from school that I was not aware of before. I have been a smoker for about 15 years. I have the plan to stop cold turkey tomorrow. I did quit once before for about a month then relapsed. I just can't seems to get ahold of it this time even after everthing I know. Wish I would have never started. If anyone out there has any advice PLEASE let me know. God Bless To All and wish us all luck in our journey to be nicotine FREE FOREVER!!!!!!!!

Hi there Quintinohio, I also started smoking around the age of 16 and am now 34 years old and am going to commit myself to quitting, isn't it amazing how many of us started in our teens? what a discusting habit and we all have our reasons for starting don't we,I am really going to do it this time but I need support,so I at least a start I guess is talking about it,which is something I've never really done before. Good luck to you,and to all of you out there in the same boat.

Hi Ordalegirl, I also started quite young - around 22 - and am trying to commit myself to stop this disgusting habit, but I need support too. I have gone my first full 24 hours without a cigarette. I am trying to put negative thoughts about smoking and cigarettes, at least it's the first time I have gone a day without having to light up in about 20 years. Good luck to you and to everyone who is trying to quit.
I am with you

zelda2524 Congratulations on going 3 days. I quit 4yrs ago this month. Let me tell you that 3rd day was the reality day for me. Do you know that after 72hrs all of the nicotine is out of your body? That is what kept me going. I didn't want to have to start over getting rid of the nicotine. Stopping smoking is one of the hardest things I have ever done. I kept begging God to take the urge to smoke away from me until I realized he won't take it from me but is gladly waiting to accept it if I will GIVE it to him. I still get the urge every now and then, but stick with it. You can do it.

Hi my name is Suzy and I am 48, almost 49 years old. I started smoking when I was 15. In October of 2004 I was told that I have emphysema. Immediatly I stopped smoking, for 75 days, with the aid of patches. December 27th I relapsed. Tomorrow is my new quit day. It's gonna be tough but I'm gonna do it, with the help and support from my daughter, once again. Please wish me luck. I hope that you can stay smoke free and keep up the good work.

Hi Suzy!
Just wanted to wish you good luck on your Quit Day tomorrow. I also recently relapsed after going 1-1/2 years without a smoke. Started with a few puffs at the end of August - then a few here and there with a drink, etc. Am now buying my own packs and although not as heavy a smoker as before......it's slowly creeping up. I'm targeting Jan 10th or 17th for my next Quit day. I'm 47 and realize it's like being an alcoholic........can't even just have one. I'm hiding it from my son - he'd freak. As a single Mom can not afford the almost $9 per pack they charge in Canada.
Best of luck............especially with the emphysema - that must be really scary!!

Hi Allymotek, this is Suzy, yes this is really scary because my Dad died of emphysema on my birthday almost 11 years ago, this May. The sad thing is that his death was not enough to make me stop smoking. I miss him dearly. Now I have the disease. I am also a single mom, with a 17 year old daughter, who would love to see me live for many years to come. I haven't had a smoke for 19 hours. Yeah! With patches and better support I think I'm gonna make it this time. It's not easy but I know that I can do it, and so can you. Good luck.

I just joined Dr Phil's website. I was reading the comments from Wednesday's show and ran across yours. I need to quit too. I have been diagnosed with the start of COPD...that's a lung disease which doesn't have a cure, but you can make it better and stop it from progressing if you quit. How's that for a motivation...But apparently not enough for me. The reason I'm writing is, do you want to have a partner in your start date? I was thinking of starting this Sunday. I quit once before for 51 weeks, but then my husband became unemployed for 8 months and I started up again. Let me know. Lori

I've been smoking for 35 years, quit a few years ago and started up again about a year ago. I also have the start of COPD. My Dr. told me to keep smoking. He has a couple of kids to send to college. I don't think I want to help him out. I got a cough about 3 weeks ago and it developed into a cold 2 weeks ago. I can't take deep breaths or blow all my air out without coughing a lung up. I've rationalized that my breathing problem is cold related and will go away, but deep down I know the truth - Its a slow destruction of my lungs from smoking. I would like to jump on board with the SUNDAY QUIT DATE. First plan: pick up nicotine patch. Any other suggestions?

Sorry I haven't replied, but things got a little crazy around here this weekend. My 82 year old Mom fell down 5 stairs. I didn't make my Sunday date....What I am planning on doing is to use the patch...that helped me ALOT last time. I also needed to find something to do with my hands, especially if I was drinking coffee. I cut a straw the size of a cigarette and used that. Like a passifier.
What was really wonderful was that after about a month, all of the craziness went away and I actually was pleased with myself.
So after I finish my pack today, I'm starting. Good luck to you. Let me know if you started on Sunday. Lori

Hi Sue, I just watched my Mother die a slow and horrible death at the young age of 65. It was heart breaking. And it was cigarettes that did it. She was diagnosed with COPD about 15 years ago and she didn't listen, and when she finally did listen I think it was to late. She kept saying I'll quit tomorrow. Well it never came and I didn't have much to say to her because I smoked too. I went to the doctor two months ago and he told me the same thing. I'm 49, and following in the foot steps of my Mom. I guit 12 days ago, theres no magic age or pill or button to push. Our lifes will be better, we will fell better. Write down the pros and cons. I've looked at it all and the PROS win hands down. Setting the quit date and keeping a journal of every time I smoked and what I was doing when I lit one up helped. I started the journal about two weeks before I quit. I also found some mints I liked to help over some of the rough spots. I use the patch. I get on line and talk to folks like your self. I try to find at least one post that interest me and write to that one. Today you where the lucky winner. It helps. I also got my support system going. Letting someone know helps. I wish you and me all the luck, its not going to be easy. But you have to start some where just don't wait to long. What she had to go thru was not dignified, and there was no glory or peace at the end. I hope you decide not to go thru that. I'm going to give it hell..GOD BLESS , GOOD LUCK, GAIL

nicotine replacement is a really good idea, either the gum or patch. Finding something to do to replace the MOTION of smoking might also help like getting a fake cigarette (something that has the same weight and length) or using sugar-free lolipops. Also, if you know when the urge to smoke is strongest, try avoiding that situation - if you can't picture sitting around after dinner without smoking then get up from the table and go for a walk, or avoid long talks on the phone if that's when you really miss it. It's about changing the routine as well as the addiction.

I've been a long time smoker too! Thanks for sharing Ciggerast, I will add that site to my arsenal of weapons against smoking. Keep up the hard work.....I know this is very hard to do. I am one of those who fell off the wagon after more than a week. Thanks to this group, I got back on and I'm still here. Hang in there. Aggie
