Hello, I know and hear many people have many different fears, I know I am not normal in the sense that I honestly in nearly 50 years have not known fear. What would prevent a person from having any known fears???

Don't question, just enjoy! I'm wondering if it's your faith that keeps you fearless.

It is your faith that keeps you fearless
        fear is only False,Evidence,appearing,real
there's really nothing to fear if your
faith is where it should be.

But it is sometimes "easier said than done"! I hope increasing my faith and Dr. Phil's advice will help me thru my great fear of being in a car accident (usually when I'm a passenger). It is interfering with my life and I can relate to the guests' feelings. I agree with Dr. Phil that it could be the "inability to control" factor.

After watching Phil today I will turn to God and ask him to deliver me of my fear of driving in a car. I'm like the guest he had on today who has a fear of getting into an accident. I need to remember the scripture in the Bible....We can do ALL things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us!

I just started to learn to drive after 20 years. I tried to drive when I was younger.
I was 16 years old. I went in the ditch. My mother told me I guess driving is not your
thing. You can always take the bus. Dr. Phil
has encouraged me to look into my other fears as well: the fear of being in a relationship, the fear of being married.

This is a reply to mom335. I too suffer from fear of driving. I dont even like to be a passenger. I realize this is probably irrational but I cant stop seeing potential crashes every where. Did you get any useful info from the show? I am the mother of three and this phobia is crippling to all of us.

I am a 35-year-old female who developed a fear of driving on the highway several years ago. My first panic attack came completely out of the blue while driving over a bridge on an interstate one day. I had never had a problem prior to that day. It got progressively worse to the point that I couldn't even drive on side streets and roads without difficulty. Once I realized that I could not avoid driving on the highway forever, I went to see my primary care physician who prescribed Paxil. Her recommendation was exposure therapy in addition to the Paxil. Because the drug worked so well, I have not sought out additional treatment which I know I need to do. I am on a low dose - 10 mg. once a day. Has profoundly changed my life. I have multiple phobias, and the Paxil seems to help slighty with the others. I have a fear of heights, and the Paxil has not done much for that, but just being able to drive on the highway again is a huge step in the right direction. I still have problems on bridges, but unfortunately where I live it isn't much of an issue.

I have tried Dr. Phil's technique of trying to talk myself out of feeling this panic, but it doesn't work. I know I'm lying to myself and no matter what I tell myself, the anxiety, panic and fear are still there. But at least my driving on the highway is under control. Now I need to address my other phobias . . . My advice is to seek medical attention. There is assistance available.

I am 36 years old and developed a fear of driving (only on highways and unfamiliar territory) 5 years ago. Had a major panic attack while driving to the corner store. Not sure why?? Might have been the reckless driving of my ex that sent me into a tizzy. Was on Paxil and it certainly helped me as a passenger but never got the courage up to be the driver. Found Paxil to make me very tired. Think I should probably get some behavoural help to deal with this. Feel horrible that I can't take the 40 minute highway trip to visit my mother. Seems I let every little thing weird me out. Hope that I can face these anxities one day and get on with life. I guess just admitting it is the first step. Should have done this years ago.

I have had the same experience. About 6 years ago out of the blue I had my first panic attack. From then until now things have not been the same. It took me a year to seek treatment and counseling. I got better, but still not the same. I drive, but still not on the highway. I don't receive treatment or counseling anymore. I feel the same way you do. It is very frustrating why can't I feel safe if that is the word while driving on the highway or in unfamiliar areas. We are not handicapped or are we? I have a 18 mos old daughter and I want to be able to go places with her by myself without any fear(s). I don't want her to be restricted because of my fears. Sometimes I wish I could go back to the way things were before I had my first and hopefully last panic attack that changed my life.

I can't believe you said you developed a fear of driving over bridges at first. That's exactly what happens to me. All of a sudden, out of the blue, after driving for 20 years I panic when I drive over a bridge. My hands get sweaty and clasp the wheel tightly. My heart starts pounding and I start to breath very fast. I feel like I could crack up at that moment. I talk to my self and say I'll be over the bridge any second now. I tell myself I can get through it. It will be over shortly. But it is a HORRIBLE feeling. I don't know where this came from. Otherwise I'm still ok driving on streets and highways.

                    brinkley1--
I had to chuckle when I read your poster because it reminded me of the time my husband and I DROVE to S.C. from up north. I had NO idea he had a bridge problem. We go over small ones all the time. Well, let me tell you something. I never in my life seen this man panic like he did when we drove over one of the biggest bridge I had ever seen. He asked our 3 yr old to start singing. She picked "Mary had a little lamb" and so that is what we sang 15 times before we got to the other side. I was so nervous for him and us that I got the case of the giggles. I laughed and laughed but kept singing for his sake. Now I know, I will do the driving next time. Fears are real for the people who feel them. You are not alone.

                    Hi,
Same thing happened to me last year driving over the Tappenzee Bridge. I wanted to let go of the steering wheel and there is no way of pulling over. I got over but I had to go slow. When I went for counseling I was told that stress from work could be a big part and that no matter how I feel - you will not die. You need to talk to yourself out loud and say you can do it. If it's early in morning I will do it but I stay over towards the right lane, put my flashers on and go slow and only look ahead in small sections. I don't know if it's all the hugh bridge iron, or the fast cars but I think in some people it starts to affect differently. On flat bridges I'm OK but when the arch starts climbing I have to take 20-30 ft. at a time and go much slower. During rush hour, I wouldn't drive it, people are too much in a hurry. But go slow - put the flashers on, they don't need to know what's going on. One other thing, I don't look behind me when going over the bridge.

WOW! I have never known or met anyone that has a fear of driving. I am 33 and I have never had a driver's license. I can drive and do drive in case of emergency, but only then. I close my eyes as a passenger and cannot stand to watch where we are going. It took my husband about 3 years to even somewhat understand what was going on, but now is very supportive. I am the worst when we are in heavy traffic and on bridges. I have tried medication, but nothing seems to really help so far. I really "want" my license, but I am so scared of driving that it totally consumes me. As far as bridges -- I can't even stand to WALK across them....

Thank you for the hope. I too have a paralyzing fear of driving on highways, either as driver or passenger. Since a very frightening near miss with a semi-driver who cut us off and could have killed us because he was "tired of waiting for someone to let him move over"--so he told us on his CB radio. Since then, my fear has gotten worse and worse (4 or 5 years) until now, my husband knows if the trip involves highways, we probably will not be going--at least I won't. And anytime a semi comes near my car, I have to fight the urge to just get away, no matter how irrational that move would be. This week, I finally had the nerve to admit I have a real problem, and my doctor has prescribed Prozac. I really really hope I have the same results you did with the Paxil. Thanks again for sharing your experience !

Like you, I am also afraid of driving. Ever since we moved to Florida I have been terrified. I thought it was just me. I am relived to see I am not alone. But what an embarrassing problem. I am absoulutely scared to death to be the passenger in a car. I am so afraid they will not see the truck coming up behind us or they are talking on their cell phone and I am freaking out because they are too close to the car in front. The drive down here from Rhode Island ruined me for live. I am so afraid to drive on the highway that I take long ways just to drive on backroads. Dr. Phil said we can change this "behavior"..I don't know how..do you?

You have piqued my curiosity with this Neuro-Linguistic Programming. I have been involved in two accidents, one 10 years and ago and one 3 years ago. Both accidents I was the passenger.I have a difficult driving long distances. My throat feels like it is going to close up and I have a hard time swallowing. My anxiety is at a high level most of the time, but driving makes me panic! My e-mail address: kkissack@rushmore.com. Please respond. Thank you!
