I'm glad Dr. Phil is doing a show on this. It angers me, the way women are subject to paying more and backing down to salesmen's tactics because we need to be "nice". Car salesmen are notoriously condescending, and act frustrated when a woman challenges them, usually causing the woman to relent. But let's be strong, and unprepared to tolerate it!

Hi! Good to see you. lol. I taped today's show. I've been holding my own with realtors. I actually hired a lawyer to help me fire the one I had previously because he was such a jerk (and admitted to screwing up). I'm on my 4th realtor and I'm telling you, it gets wearing. I have to fight for every last thing, but I have been getting what I want. I'll be glad when my house is sold and it's all over. I don't think I'll ever buy another house! And I used to be a realtor!

Confusion Regarding Realtors
Posted by: jennyboo67

I don't understand what kind of business relationship you would have with a realtor that would allow him or her to "pull a scam". All of the negotiating (at least here in Ontario) is done with the vendor. They ultimately decide what they will or will not take for their property. The realtor acts more as a "presenter of information" and advertises, promotes and shows property to potential purchasers. In fact often realtors recommend that offers be read over by and attoutnet to protect both the purchaser's and vendor's interests. What's the deal? I am confused.

Thanks for your post! I got out after 7 months. What an eye opener that training was! The lawyer was worth every cent of the price I paid (and I negotiated the price.) I got the lawyer to break down his time into quarters of an hour. lol. Well, we've got nothing but time on this planet, we might as well put it to good use! I've got a good realtor now recommended to me by my lawyer and even got my first offer.

Do you people out there agree that if you are selling real estate (by owner) that you should not accept a buyer's first offer? That you should counter offer? My husband is accepting an offer made because he points out that we are saving the services of a realtor. However, we will have to have an attorney look over the papers, etc.

Car Salesmen, Ruthless!

Recently my husband took me out to purchase a used vehicle, when we found one the salesman wanted to deal with my husband and treated me as if I didn't exhist. Well, when it came to haggling over the price, their original price they tried to make it sound as if that was an awesome price for the vehicle, my husband was willing to give in to a $600 drop, not me, I offered $1895 less and told them because of certain conditions on the vehicle, it wasn't worth their asking price, I eventually won out but they only dropped $1420, I offered to let it go and keep looking around, and they came back with something I knew between my husband and I could afford.

Men Get That Too

It seems it's not just women, it's men that need to learn the art of negotiation too. This is something we have lost in America, other countries do this all the time, at fish markets and food markets since in their systems they don't have set prices. And I'm sure plenty of women are doing it and doing it well. I don't think that this stuff is particulary targeted toward women, most salespeople are equal opportunity when it comes to getting the most money from anyone....they just play on the different ways of men and women.

Not all car sales people are dishonest. I am one of the good guys. However in a negotion process the salesman must get as much as possible for a car. If however he treats a woman different from a man he's stupid. Women are some of my best repeat clients. I treat people the way they want to be treated..with respect and honesty. I would love to be on Dr. Phil to tell him and his vewers how the good guys do business

actually I have yet to meet one of the "good" guys in a car salesman, so how about letting me know where you are from, if it is close to me, I might drive there and negotiate with you. I just tried Dr. Phil's techniques to get a reasonable deal on a car, I knew what my tradein value was, (realistically, not outrageous) and what the invoice and overhead costs were for the new car I wanted, I brought the internet info with me, he gave me a deal, I asked if that was his best deal (rebate off the second sticker and way too many costs on the trade-in), he started laughing as if he couldn't believe I was questioning him, said yes, that is the best deal, I said okay, now look at these figures, tell me what it will take to have me buy this car today, at a reasonable cost for me and a decent profit for you and let's talk, he wanted to know where I was getting this, all the time laughing at me, and when I told him I saw a Dr. Phil show to help me negotiate a good deal, he said, Dr. PHil needs to go be a psych and stop trying to sell cars. I left after once again asking if he couldn't make a better deal when he knew it was a bad deal. so tell me, where do I find the good guys who don't laugh at confident, stand up women who know their numbers, are not being unrealistic and just want the deal they would give the men. (I have 4 cars, two daughters with cars, and buy a new car almost every 2 years.)

I was dealing with a great sales man when I went to buy my car. He was only interested in getting our payments as close to what we wanted as possible. We are still on a first name bases with this man. I lost my remote and my key to the car a couple of months later. It should have cost me about $100 for both of them. I went and talked to him about it. He paid for it and I paid him back. He got it for me for $40 because they get a nice discount! He even stopped me that Wal-mart one day! I thought it was great how he reconized me. I told him I will no back to him next time I need a car....no questions asked!!!!

This show has been one of my favorites in giving me practical information for daily life. Everywhere you go, and even at home, you can't get away from having to negotiate something. I'm especially appreciative of the first guest who had the courage to speak out despite maybe feeling embarrassed or showing too much of herself. Little did she know she was speaking for alot of us women. I appreciated her being so upfront. I'd personally like to see more "educational" type programs like this. In a society that discourages women being strong or assertive, it's rewarding to have a step by step strategy spelled out for us. That's how we learn anything else, math or a foreign language. Great show!

Negotiations are not my strong point. But, I tried it and it worked! I asked for a reduce rate for purchase a used book from another online student. He agreed to cut $10.00 off his price!

In July, I bought a CRV Honda, EX model, 4wheel drive, auto with side bags & alloy wheels. I looked up the retail and cost values of the model I wanted. While at the dealership, the salesman did not seem interested in bargaining down $22,900 so I left. He and his manager called me 3 or 4 times to return. I returned to deal. I asked for $2,000 less, he said no, so I told the salesman to bring up the online price which was about $1,300 less than the sticker. I told him that I would buy it for that price and he agreed. This was a great show! Men are also at a disadvantage, at times. Any man who has gone into a jewelry store to buy a gift for his wife will tell you that this is true.
My wife is an exellent negotiator in areas where she is equipped with the knowledge about the product, just as I am, with things like power lawn mowers and computers.
I think that men and women need some cross training to learn how to negotiate in areas where they aren't as familiar. I've printed out the ten tips on negotiating, from this site, and I'm going to try to use them.

I too have had problems at car dealerships- from being totally ignored or treated like someone who had not done research before going there as to the value of my present car and the going price on what I wanted to buy. From the salesman to the financial manager I was treated like an idiot. Of course, I finally walked out but not as soon as I should have. I was very proud of myself because I usually just listen to them, because they are 'men' and that's how I was raised-that the 'man' knows best. I do have trouble 'negotiating' in my personal life because I am such a 'people pleaser'. Hopefully, after watching this show twice I will be able to do better and not be such a doormat in every aspect of my life. HOORAY FOR DR. PHIL!!!!!
