    Exercise Resolution

Having made the same resolution to exercise numerous times in the past, I am trying something new this year. I have pledged to donate $1 for each mile that I walk to charity and have pledged to walk 3 miles every day. I will send a check for $21 ($1 for each mile walked) to a different charity each Wednesday. While not a large one-time cash outlay, it will be over $1000 in charitable donations by the end of the year which makes me feel good. I am hopeful that by committing to people in need, I will be encouraged to walk ... by not walking, I will be hurting someone in need. So far I have kept my resolution. (I know, I know, it's only January 6th but it's a record for me.)
      Wow!

That is one of the best resolutions I have ever heard! Not only are you doing something good for yourself, you also are helping others through your genorosity! Keep it up...making it to January 6th is pretty good in my book!
Imagine if we all did this..

I like your idea so much that I think I'll try it too. A wonderful side effect of helping others is that you feel good about yourself. One of the common reasons that people don't take care of themselves is that they don't feel good about themselves so this would help fight that. It's perfect. Also, hang in there. Don't say its 'only' Jan 6th, say 'hey, it's Jan 6th and I'm going strong!'
      Thanks!

I applaud you on your choice to exercise and get healthy. Reading your message I thought you were serious this time and NOW more self motivated. The charities that you choose will just love you for your donation also. I can relate on the troubles you have faced and using food to be your crutch along the way. I am finally now "getting it" that I have no control over other people's problems and can't solve my own. That's one of the draw backs of being a pretty good listener I guess. Now after listening to a person intently and can empathize, I ask them "So what are you going to do about it"? That person has to live with it and not me. It's a part of letting go so I can leave it in their hands. Fifteen years ago I quit smoking and I'm very proud of myself for doing it. I have no urges now and never the desire to go back to it either. I only gained maybe 10 pounds at most as at that time I was a healthy eater anyway but I had to drink alot of water to flush out the toxins. You will need to do the same.

The best of success to you and Happy New Year.

I have made promises to myself to lose weight over and over again and have never followed through. It is so disheartening! I always find it hard to hold myself accountable. I believe I have finally found the answer this time! I have also decided to tie in a charity with "my cause.” I found a program called the World Wide Workout put on by the Make-A-Wish Foundation that has made it so easy to workout and help out! Basically, I went to www.wish.org, signed up for the World Wide Workout and a workout program was provided for me. Friends and family are asked to make a donation in my honor to sponsor my workout! Each day I report the workout and at the end of the week my sponsors are sent my progress report. So, if someone has sponsored me and I didn't work out for that week, I get caught! I find it very motivational! I'm excited that I am not only helping improve myself but also helping a wonderful organization making children with life-threatening illnesses wishes come true! I'm loving it and recommend if you are looking for motivation and accountability – how about being personally responsible for making a child’s wish come true! That’s motivation!
      fantastic idea

I have been trying to figure out a way to actually put a donation to a charity group for a long time, on a regular basis and this is the best one I've ever heard. Thanks and God bless you for thinking of this. I have a lot of physical problems but I love to walk. Has been a while since I could walk a mi. but Ill donate even though I'm only able to do short spurts. This is truly a stroke of genius, for those of us who want to improve ourselves and our World. Please Dr. Phil if this woman needs moral support or any kind of help to help her quit, please tell her to contact me, I've been there and I know how hard it is to quit. She can reach me at 203-268-3712 or by e-mail rufous@snet.net, maybe I can make a difference.

      Hey:
I smoked for 28 years, tried to quit on many occasions, none were successful, until my last quit 4 months ago.

If you have ever even thought about quitting smoking, go to this website:

      www.quitnet.com

The knowledge, support, and inspiration of the people there helped me quit for good this time.

The community at the Quitnet is an instant attraction, ex-smokers assisting ex-smokers.

The Quitnet is for smokers, what AA is for drinkers. I couldn't have quit without it.

Regarding the woman who can't quit smoking. Yes she can! I smoked from the age of 16 until 8 months ago (I am 51 years old). I was certain I could never quit after trying hypnosis and other techniques. My husband also smoked, but fortunately, even though not suggesting migraines are a great thing, he lit a cigarette one afternoon and at the same time a tremendous migraine hit. He was able to quit on his own cold turkey. Fortunately that was not my cure. I continued to smoke until I had had enough of the rising cost and my guilt for not having the strength of character to quit. I began adding up the extra things we could have or do with the extra $400+ per month and the toll the cigarettes were taking on my body, and vowed to set a date. However, I could never have quit with patches, gum or any other aid (tried them all), UNTIL I went to my Dr. for a checkup. She prescribed a pill of some sort. It was quite costly (not as much as continuing to smoke), however, I followed the directions and quit cold turkey after using it as directed for a few weeks. I did not cut down. I set a date and actually quit smoking on that day. I have not had even a puff of a cigarette for over 8 months and I still can't believe I did it. I feel so much better about myself and my life. I now have a 2.5 month old grandchild, so I am even more thrilled! Please suggest this new drug for this woman. She will not be sorry!

Before watching the show I had no intention of quitting. But, Dr. Phil said some things that really caught my attention. I always told myself that the reason I could not quit was because I had no willpower. Well, Phil says there's no such thing as willpower, ok. He says it's a matter a maturity, hey I'm a grown up!! Long story short, I havn't had a cigarette in 3 days and I feel good about it. I'm not saying I quit, but that I'm just choosing not to have a cig right now. For the first time in 20 years I don't feel controled by cigarettes, but by myself! Wish me luck and I wish the same for all of you.
          Yes you can
