I watched the show today and the challengers were talking about their children....I have 2 kids, who are by no means overweight, but I have noticed that their afterschool snack choices are not so hot (of course I buy the food so it is my fault). Anyone have any good/healthy afterschool snack ideas that you give your kids?

I think I got quite a bit from todays show, but I was wondering why-in the middle of the show-when Dr Phil went to a commercial, it was for ......you guessed it- Pizza !!!!
        funny but NOT!

I didn't get that commercial in my neck of the woods.....but on one show a while back....right after Dr. Phil had said that diets don't work......the commercial was for a "diet program" offered with weekly dues!

Dr. Phil has no control over commercials, I don't believe.....its the network and or local affiliate that sell commercial time.
          Not so funny

Jenny Craig commercials come, often, right after a discussion about not being part of a food-only plan. This is poor planning on the part of the product that chooses to advertise on Dr. Phil, especially after learning about the Weight Challenge. I hate to see Dr. Phil loose advertisers, and I don't think he will. Those of us who are aware can just have our chuckle and get on with it.

Hi Laura - As you know it does pay the bills and if the diet commercials keeps Dr Phil in our living rooms do we care??
          Dr. Phil should have control!

Dr. Phil is powerful enough now and has gotten enough attention with the Weight Loss Solution, that he should have some say over the commercials on his show. It would make the weight loss plan ever so much more powerful if he would demand that all fast food/junk food commercials be taken off the show and get commercials on that reinforce his attitudes.
lets all e-mail dr phil and let him know

In our neck of the woods (Ohio) - we get Hershy's commercials that talk about chocolate being happiness - seen that one - what a contradiction. And, there's a lot more of the bariatric commercials, and the group things - sometimes I look and think - do I really want to forgo the quick fix? Nah - But - another person is right - the network does the commercial programming.

While I was watching today, they ran a furniture polish commercial where "Mark marks" on all the furniture and jolly Mom just runs along behind cleaning up after him. In my mind I could just hear Dr. Phil chiding the Mom to "Get real, lady."

Dr. Phil has no control over the commercials that air. I noticed the commercials, too. The marketing for the network is separate from the programming - but it is quite a contradiction.

unless you have super portion control those snacks except for the veggies and possibly air popped plain popcorn are setting you up to fail.
Cheese, on a diet ? Are you prepared to eat 1 portion size cube 1X1X1 inch ? I think not.
        Nuts ???? oh, my.

I thought we weren't 'on a diet' here - and nothing is 'wrong' - just there are better choices. Plus, I thought the question was about snacks for kids - and many nutrional experts will say that a serving of string cheese, 15 almonds, and some other solid nutrional food for a child is better than any junk stuff we normally think.

My 5 children grew up on fruits and yogurt - and cheese, cottage cheese, and whole grain breads. carrot sticks, and celery sticks (with peanut butter - can't get much in those sticks) were munchies. My sweet tooth gets us all in trouble.

Cheese is a protein snack and so are nuts. They are both good for you and keep you fuller longer.
If you can eat one serving of applesauce or yogurt, you can just as easily eat one serving of cheese or nuts.
          This is not a diet...

this a "new way of life" to change your life, and a food program that is designed to help you lose weight.

All the snacks mentioned are healthy foods, used in moderation and incorporated into the food plan for your week.

Nuts are very healthy for you. Buy a bag of them, get a nut cracker and have some! FRESH WHOLE NUTS (or pick them up, all in bulkstores such as health food stores.) You can change your idea of what a nut is, it is not greasy, salted nuts from a can or jar!

Yes, you can have cheese on a healthy food program......normal food program.....there are many "real" cheeses both domestic and imported that offer many vitamins, protein, etc. NOT ALL CHEESES CAN BE CUT.....usually the hard cheeses contain the most fats....you can still have hard cheeses on a food program and its healthy, too...there are many semi-soft and soft cheeses that are delish!

Try some "real" yogurt with fresh or frozen berries.

Air popped popcorn is very good for you and serves as a snack, this snack provides lots of fiber.......and you can have quite a bit of it.....I said air popped popcorn. NOT BUTTER OR MARGARINE TOPPED POPCORN.

Another treat for the kids after school, instant oatmeal, yes even the quaker kind with a little sugar for a treat / WITH MILK.

I agree. We need to find the healthy foods we like, and make them part of our life. We made unhealthy food part of it. So let's go ahead and make some changes.

Have you tried Yogurt Cheese? Comes in some spicy flavors. I think the mfg. is Hain. I have found it in Health Food Stores, and also the local Super Market. If you are in need of a cheese fix. There is also feta. goat cheese, and blue crumbles. Put a spoonful into a 1+1/2 egg omlette, cooked up with pam, and some spinach. Really good. Gives you protien to last. Add your whole fruit, or dry whole wheat toast. I don't , but go ahead. I find the egg filling enough. Good luck all, stop complaining, we did not complain when we were over eating. So we should not complain as we get slim, and healthy.

Cheese is good food, and a good part of a healthful (small d) diet. And you don't have to have a 1" square. And a few nuts, heck yeah! Almonds and walnuts are great, just not a pound of them at a time. A handful of nuts is very satisfying if part of an eating plan that is healthful overall.
Whole foods are best, just skip the processed stuff.

I used to fix fruit snacks for my son after he came home from school. Examples: Banana sliced lengthwise with a smidgeon of peanut butter as a filling. Apples with a slice of cheese or sliced with cream cheese or peanut better spread in between or Raisins and peanut butter filled celery sticks. Freeze some seedless grapes, my son loved those and even packed them in his lunch, they are cold and pop in their mouths.
