It's unfortunate that in this day and age some people insist on not listening to good sound advice or even listening to their own body. Must be the fame and glory and artificial world we create, but I feel that the best indicator of age is attitude and for the twin sister (invited on the show) who smokes and sunbathes, I think she actually looks more like a indignant spoiled child and not a mature woman. And as far as the "glow about her" it's more like a haze of smoke, grey tinted, pore obstructed skin, nothing young and good looking about it. But again she's an adult and if she chooses to rot away, it's her choice, but a least, let's not pretend that she looks good in the process.

Warning Signs......Not always true

I am 24 years old and last year I was diagnose with the first stages of melanoma. When the twin that said that there are warning signs I just shook my head. I had no actual warning signs I grew up with moles on my back, face, foot and stomach did not think anything of it. I did not sunbath on a regular basis but you know what I still got melanoma. And it was the scariest thing to here when the doctor told me that if I would not have come in when I did that I would have died in five years. And I now have to check myself for new moles, skin irritations, I cannot be in the sun certain times of the day and I have to make sure that I have sunscreen on when I do go outside. So for me to here her say it is no big deal it really ticked me off. But I am just one person and I this person obviously does not care about her life and her health.
I hope this show helps someone realize that the sun not only makes you look older but it also may just kill you.

WARNING SIGNS NOT ALWAYS TRUE I AGREE

People have the wrong idea about skin cancer
being so benign I also thought that this is
probably the LEAST of cancers. You see it!
You get it removed! NOT always true.
I also had Melanoma ... which I might add is the fastest, most deadly cancer there is.
IF not caught in time. Unlike other Cancers
this CANNOT be treated by radition or chemotherapy.... If the area is NOT removed
by surgery during a certain period of time. There is NO treatment I have also had
Basal Cell skin cancer several times as well.
It is really sad that when you are told you
have cancer that you are relieved because its
just "regular" skin cancer . NOT Melanoma!
I wish people were NOT so flip about skin cancer. and would UNDERSTAND that EVERYONE is
at risk . even NON sun worshipers... like me
QUESTION:
Does anyone know where I can find documention
stated by the visiting dr. on the show today
that tanning beds CAUSE skin cancer ?? I have a friend I would like to be able to show
proof to.
Thank You for listening

Info On Tanning Beds

Documentation regarding the dangers of tanning beds should also be available at the tanning salon your friend goes to. Most "reputable" tanning salons will require customers to sign a waiver/disclaimer indicating that they are aware of the risk of skin cancer. More likely than not, your friend has signed this form, but never read it.
I'd also like to add that skin cancer is deadly. I am 25 years old, and my mother died from skin cancer less than a year ago. She was NEVER a sun worshipper, but she suffered some severe sun burns as a child. Her first topical melanoma (a bad mole) occured 19 years ago, and though she had it removed, malignant cells remained dormant for several years. The cancer metastasized (transferred) to her lymph nodes 3 years ago and she had those removed. In December of 2003 it metastasized again in the form of a nearly golf-ball sized tumor in her brain, and she died 6 months later after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
I was stupid for a few years before my mother's lymph node diagnosis, and I used to go to tanning salons against the wishes of my parents, and KNOWING the risks. I wish that young girls would not allow vanity to pressure them into life threatening activities. I understand the desire to have a "healthy glow", but this can be obtained through self-tanners, and even spray-on booths. They can be expensive, but besides sparing the health risks associated with tanning beds, self-tanner can also serve to ward off wrinkles, when used in conjunction with a daily sun protection. For parents who may be reading this, please try to prevent your daughters and sons from going to tanning salons. In many states, you have to be 18 to tan, but very few salons strictly adhere to this requirement. I cannot express how devastating skin cancer related deaths can be, and I often feel extreme guilt for my mother's death. Had her cancer not progressed at the time and in the fashion it did, I would probably continue to be a reckless young woman who puts her life at risk to look good.
Lastly, I'd like to say thank you to Dr. Phil for addressing the dangers of tanning. It's unfortunate that people are not as aware of the true dangers.

We use several different resources here at our cancer education center on a daily basis. The best national information you can find on skin cancer or any other type of cancer is the National Institutes of Health who does the bulk of the cancer research in our country. Their website is www.cancer.gov
Another great resource is the Center's For Disease Control and their website is www.cdc.gov
Of course, the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org
And finally, the Skin Cancer Foundation is also a great resource www.skincancer.org

Prevention

I think prevention is the key, but sometimes our bodies need a little help. My family was introduced to a great product that contains fruits grown near the equator. The fruit's skins are bright and colorful to protect themselves from the very direct sunlight which means they are very powerful antioxidants which neutralizes free radicals which cause damage to healthy cells.
Too bad humans can't have the same protection from the sun.

My sister-in-law passed away last year at age 34, four months after being diagnosed with stage 4 metastasized malignant melanoma. She had no spots on her skin or questionable moles. Her first "warning sign" was a seizure caused by a brain tumor that was a result of the cancer that had been spreading through her body. If you think you'll see a warning sign that will give you time for treatment, you are GRAVELY mistaken. Not all melanomas are visible or treatable.
There is too much information available to plead ignorance to the facts. Get smart and start protecting your body.

Hi there, first off, I have to say that I have had a good scare today! I own my own tanning bed and now feel like I should get rid of it. I got it so I wouldn't have to get in the sun so much to get some color. Well, now that I have been doing this awhile it has became addicting, in fact when I don't tan, people who know me ask if I am not feeling well, or they say something is different. I wish I never would have started doing this. I am so sorry for the couple of reply's here of people who did get Melanoma. May I ask who did you go to? A dermatologist, or a regular doctor? I do have some very small mole like things on my back and now am gonna go get it checked out. I am definitely gonna change my lifestyle!

HI Maybe Robin or someone can answer this. I am 23 and have used a vit c cream before. I loved it but it was very expensive. I am interested in the cream she recommeded. Is this cream right for someone of my age? Is this the only cream I will need or will I need anything additional. I am very good with keeping up on skin care and have tried several creams and am yet to find the one.
Any other tips for someone my age would be well used. Thanks

Hi- there are a lot of vitamin c creams on the market at all kinds of price levels but splurge and get the kind with bio-available or lipophilic vitamin c. otherwise, you are just wasting your money! $40 sounds (for Robin's recommended product)sounds like a lot of money, but trust me, it is worth it!
