New Parenting Styles

January 5, 2010

Have we become a nation of parents obsessed with doing everything for our kids to ensure they'll turn out right? A number of experts are suggesting it's time for parents to loosen their grip, relax hardcore parenting styles and let their kids be kids again. Pros and Cons of Parenting Styles

Are there benefits for kids of laid-back or overprotective parenting? Are there skills laid-back parents need to teach their children? Are overprotective parents robbing their kids of life-enriching experiences and self-esteem? Linda Murray, editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com and Dr. Michele Borba, a parenting educator and author, weigh in with the pros and cons of different parenting styles.

"If you go too far in that extreme, your kids may not feel that they can come to you when they have a problem."

Still the Most Overprotective Mom in America?

Teresa and Ashlee first appeared on the show six years ago, when Ashlee complained she was tired of being treated like a baby. When they came back, Teresa admitted she was paranoid and overprotective. During their last appearance, Teresa worried her parenting style had backfired. Now, Teresa says she's changed, but Ashlee says her mom still calls her 30 to 40 times a day.

Is Ashlee really ready to be on her own, or is she just as attached to her mom?

"If you communicate to your children that the world is a scary place, if they see you anxiety-ridden, if they see you treating the world as a horrible and hurtful place, they're going to learn to be afraid of the world. That's a bad message to send to your children," Dr. Phil says. "You need to teach them to be responsible, to protect themselves, to be aware, but you don't want to give this paranoid-type message that causes your children to be crippled. "
