Crazy, Stupid Love

January 7, 2013
Amanda says her husband of two years, Jeffrey, was recently caught in an online child sex sting and sentenced to five years in prison, yet she’s not sure if she should leave him. Why does she say she blames herself for what happened? And, hear from Amanda’s parents, Juliet and Timothy, who say they just want their daughter to move on. When Dr. Phil gives Amanda a harsh dose of reality, will she see the situation for what it is? Then, 18-year-old Seri says that two years ago, she fell in love with 26-year-old Hector, who convinced her to quit school and become a prostitute — and give him all the profits. Hector was convicted of sexual assault of a child and is now serving up to 30 years in prison. Seri is raising their daughter and has a new boyfriend, Will, but she admits that she would consider taking Hector back, if given the opportunity. Why does Seri say she still has feelings for her abuser?

A Husband's Betrayal

Amanda, 23, says she met her husband, Jeffrey, in high school, and their life seemed like a fairy tale. The couple eventually eloped. “When I said, ‘I do,’ I meant it,” Amanda says. She says when they learned Jeffrey would be deployed with the military, he stayed on base, and Amanda moved home with her parents.

On March 30, Amanda learned Jeffrey had been arrested, along with 18 other men, as part of an undercover underage sex sting. “I broke down in tears immediately, and I was disgusted,” Amanda says. She says Jeffrey explained away the incident, claiming that a friend had used his cell phone, and that Jeffrey drove him to see his girlfriend — and he denied any other involvement, saying it was all one big mistake. Amanda says she believed him.

Amanda says instead of divorcing Jeffrey, she married him for a second time — this time in a Catholic Church — to make it more official. But, just days later, she says she was blindsided when Jeffrey confessed to everything in detail in court and was sentenced to five years in prison and 10 years of sex offender probation.

Amanda says this entire experience has consumed her. “I go to bed with a racing heart, and I wake up with a racing heart,” she says.

Amanda’s parents, Juliet and Timothy, say they are confused and frustrated with Amanda, knowing that she is still in love with Jeffrey. “I only have one good punch in my body, and I’m saving that for Jeff,” Timothy says.

“I love him, and it’s hard to turn that off,” Amanda says.

Dr. Phil tells Amanda, “You are grieving the loss of the man you wish he was.”

Amanda explains how she feels Jeffrey manipulated her into marrying him for a second time. And, Amanda’s parents share their fury.

Amanda watches footage from the sting for the first time. And, Sargeant Patrick Golemme, an officer involved with the sting, joins the show.

Amanda’s parents say they are confused and frustrated with her. Dr. Phil encourages them to have more compassion. “This girl is a victim.” And, Dr. Phil has a heart-to-heart with Amanda.

“I want to know why I wasn’t enough. There are days that I look in the mirror and I think, I must be that bad; a 13-year-old is more appealing than me.”

Dr. Phil encourages Amanda to start divorce proceedings — and offers her professional help to move forward. She accepts the help.

Innocence Lost

Seri says she was just 16 years old when she fell in love with Hector, 24. She says within a few days of being together, Hector convinced her to drop out of school, become a prostitute — and give him all the money. She says he posted a Craigslist ad with photos, and for the next six months, she was meeting with two to three men per day. “Hector was my boyfriend and my pimp,” she says.

One night, Seri says she got into a car with an undercover cop and was arrested. Following an investigation, Hector was also arrested and is now serving 30 years in prison. Shortly following her arrest, Seri discovered she was pregnant with Hector’s child — a daughter who is now 1 year old.

Seri says she currently writes Hector in prison and still has feelings for him.

Seri explains how Hector convinced her to sell her body for money — profits he kept. And, is she sorry for testifying against him in court?

Seri reveals her conflicting emotions toward Hector — and her current boyfriend, Will, reacts. Dr. Phil attempts to shed some light on the situation. “I’m going to appeal to you as a mother. Once you have a child, you have a higher duty than any duty you’ve ever had.”

Dr. Phil offers Seri help to overcome her past, and she accepts.

Will promises to stand by Seri. “I will never give up on her.”
