Ted Williams: The Update, Part 2

Ted Williams, the homeless man with the golden voice, told Dr. Phil that he was making good progress in rehab. How will his sobriety affect his relationship with his girlfriend, Kathy, an admitted user? Will she agree to get clean?

Cleaning Up Her Life?

Dr. Phil turns his attention to Ted. "At this point, what do you want for Kathy?" he inquires.

"I would love for Kathy to take advantage of the same opportunity that you have afforded me," Ted says.

Dr. Phil doesn't mince words. "Ted, I'm going to tell you the truth as I know it: you are an addict and an alcoholic," he says. "You know that, I know that, and you've been very forthcoming about that. You are in treatment, and you're going to deal with issues that are necessary for you to manage this complex disease. It's going to take a lot of work. I know this: you're not going to be able to drink or use drugs for the rest of your life. If you really and truly want a chance to succeed, you're going to have to get clean and sober and change your entire lifestyle."

Dr. Phil faces Kathy. "If you're going to be in Ted's life, and he's going to be clean and sober, you're going to have to get clean and sober," he says. He mentions that Kathy has made it clear that while she agreed to appear on the show, she's uninterested in receiving any sort of treatment. "I'm not going to chase you. I want Ted to know I have made you that offer. I'm making it to you right now. It's my understanding you're declining that."

"At this particular time, yes, I am declining it," Kathy responds. She says she has an open case pending, and she'd like to focus on her legal issues. She'll then reunite with Ted when he's out of treatment.

Dr. Phil takes her to task. "This isn't an open door for you to call me five years from now when you want to go to rehab," he says. He has a strong warning for her: "If you don't do this, just so you know, I'm going to do everything I can to keep Ted from being involved with you."
